We originally started gardening because we were living an hours drive from Kigali and had no electricity (so no refrigeration). We needed to eat something, so we hired local farmers to help us grow our own food. However, we soon began to worry about the possible negative health impact of the powerful synthetic pesticides being used to keep the bugs at bay. So we transitioned to organinc gardening by means of companion planting, mulching, composting. Yields are lower, and some old favorites such as Roma tomatoes have been replaced by cherry tomatoes, but we and our guests can now enjoy tastier produce and increased health benefits. Recently we began cultivating organic stevia below the fish ponds.
