Thanks to a generous grant from Gatsby Africa, Lakeside Fish Farm developed this research facility for the benefit of East African fish farmers. The ultimate goal of this lab is to bring down the cost of production to $1/kg so that we can compete globally.

Selective Breeding in Aquaculture
Selective breeding is the process of choosing parents of the next generation of broodstock to improve performance for certain traits considered to be important during production and marketing. Faster-growing, hardier and more disease-resistant fish generate a greater return on the fish farmer's investment. This lab established a gene pool from which three genetically diverging families have been derived. |
It is critical for fish farmers to carefully manage their feed costs in order to be financially sustainable. Aquafeed constitutes a significant portion of production costs. The exact amount varies depending on a number of factors, including species, locality and technology.
In general, feed costs make up anywhere from 30-75% of total production cost. In the case of East African tilapia culture, where the climate favours outdoor culture, where labour costs are low, and haulage costs are high, scaled-up producers are likely to spend about 75% of their production costs on feed.
